PHOTOGRAPHY WORKSHOP IN THE REDWOODS

Komenich-150x146Pulitzer-prize-winning photographer, and one of this year’s InFocus judges, Kim Komenich will lead a weekend workshop designed for anyone with a digital camera from an iPhone or point-and-shoot to a high-end DSLR. The idea is to move beyond thinking of photography as acquisition, the taking of pictures. Better to go for a walk on our beautiful trails through the redwoods and relax long enough to see photography as telling a story and making pictures.

Date(s) – January 18th through January 20th –3:00 PM

Poetry Out Loud in Full Swing!

The 2012-2013 Poetry Out Loud program is now in full swing.  BZ Smith, Tuolumne County Poetry Out Loud volunteer coordinator said:

“We’ve had a slow start this year, but now we’re at the point where we are moving forward.  Sonora Union High School had its School-Level Poetry Out Loud Competition, which took place at 3:30 December 6th. Sonora High finalists: Senior Sienna Hapig-Ward, Senior Katherine Hohne, Junior Nancy Jaggy-Brown and Sophomore Jodi Bermea.  The four students will represent Sonora Union High School District at the Tuolumne County Final Competition on Monday, January 28th, 6:30PM, at Stage 3 Theatre.

Last years POL winners with Rick Foster of Duende Drama & Literature, Tuolumne County’s official Poetry Out Loud coach

We’d like to offer huge thanks to teachers Carol Woods and Maggie Hodson for all their efforts to carry the Poetry Out Loud Torch at Sonora High!  They are both gifted teachers, who understand the impact and influence that this program is making in kids’  lives.

Stayed tuned for Tioga High School’s competition on Thursday, December 19th, in Groveland. Many thanks to teacher Emily Hanchett! Then be ready for the Summerville/Connections Academy and Home School students’ competition on Friday, January 11th, 2013, in the Summerville High School Library.  We extend deep thanks to School Library Tech Sara LaTorre for all of her help.

AND THEN, please mark your calendar for the Tuolumne County Poetry Out Loud Finals that will take place on Monday evening, January 28th, 2013, 6:30 sharp at Stage 3 Theatre.  We will be contacting potential judges very soon to ask for their help.”

Write on Women–WOW!

Wow is right! Congratulations are in order for this well-established group of writers in Tuolumne County. (since 1997) Their initial range of activities expanded beyond bimonthly meetings into “The Word Project”. In September of 2012, the Word Project Press published its first book, Spare Scenes, by Gillian P. Herbert.” In speaking with author/editor Herbert, she commented that Word Project Press had quickly reached critical mass, when the “gatekeepers” of publishing–(the traditional structure of pounding the pavement by authors to get their work acknowledged and accepted, and into print), had been circumvented by technological advancements in the digital/print world.

Early on some called this shift to small presses a fad. This has proven to be untrue, and these early efforts, have even expanded by the digital delivery systems such as e-books, Kindle and the like. As with many other activities in our lives, technology has changed the publishing industry, making it possible for smaller publishers like the Word Project Press to help publish works by authors whose voices would otherwise be unavailable to a wider audience.

Although the Word Project Press will, at this early stage of its formation publish two books a year, five people have already asked to be included in the publishing of their literary works by Tuolumne County’s home grown press. Other activities also under consideration for future development are:

  • Providing guidance and support to newly forming writing groups in the community;
  • Periodic writing workshops with guest writers;
  • A writing conference and/or retreat;
  • Six week sessions to help individuals who want to “tell their life’s story”.

For all of the women involved in WOW, the fulfillment of being able to get theirs and other people’s stories out into the world is what their organization is all about. WOW’s current members are: Patricia Harrelson, Gillan Herbert, Shelly Muniz, Ann St James, Ellen Stewart, Cynthis Restivo, Blanche Adams, Carol Biederman and Suzan Still.

WOW, in addition to monthly meetings, under the auspices of  “the Word Project” hosts First Fridays
(open mic) from 7pm to 8pm. All Writers are welcome to read their poetry, fiction and creative non-fiction. Sign-ups for 5 minute slots begin at 6:30 pm

Catch some of these talented writers and poets at First Fridays at Sonora Joe’s, 140 South Washington Street. For additional information contact: pharrelson@gmail.com

For more information on the Word Project Press, and to find out about submissions, please visit their website at: http://wordprojectpress.com/
